Note: Armenian has Eastern and Western variants. Some spellings or pronunciations may differ slightly – below are widely used forms, plus common alternatives where helpful.
1) Բարև (Barev) – Hello
Pronunciation: ba-REV
Use it for casual and polite greetings.
Example: Բարև, Անահիտ։ – Hello, Anahit.
2) Շնորհակալություն (Shnorhakalutyun) – Thank you
Pronunciation: shno-rha-ka-loo-TYUN
Common shorter form: Շնորհակալ եմ (Shnorhakal em)
Example: Շնորհակալություն օգնության համար։ – Thank you for your help.
3) Այո / Ոչ (Ayo / Voch) – Yes / No
Pronunciation: AH-yo / VOCH
Example: Դու հայ ե՞ս։ Այո։ – Are you Armenian? Yes.
4) Ինչպե՞ս ես (Inchpes es?) – How are you?
Pronunciation: inch-PES es
Formal/plural: Ինչպե՞ս եք (Inchpes ek?)
Example: Բարև, ինչպե՞ս ես։ – Hi, how are you?
5) Լավ (Lav) – Good / Fine
Pronunciation: lahv
Example: Ես լավ եմ։ – I’m good / I’m fine.
6) Իմ անունն է… (Im anunn e…) – My name is…
Pronunciation: eem ah-NOON eh
Example: Իմ անունն է Լիանա։ – My name is Liana.
7) Ցտեսություն (Tstesutyun) – Goodbye
Pronunciation: ts-te-soo-TYUN
Short/informal: Ց’տես (T’stes)
Example: Ցտեսություն, մինչ նոր հանդիպում։ – Goodbye, until next time.
8) Խնդրում եմ / Խնդրեմ (Khndrum em / Khndrem) – Please / You’re welcome
Pronunciation: khn-DROOM em / KHND-rem
Use “Խնդրում եմ” when asking politely, and “Խնդրեմ” as “you’re welcome / here you go.”
Example: Խնդրում եմ, նստեք։ – Please, have a seat.
9) Ներողություն (Neroghutyun) – Sorry / Excuse me
Pronunciation: ne-ro-GHO-tyoon
Essential for polite conversation and getting attention.
Example: Ներողություն, կարո՞ղ եք օգնել։ – Excuse me, can you help?
10) Հայերեն (Hayeren) – Armenian (language)
Pronunciation: ha-ye-REN
Example: Ես սովորում եմ հայերեն։ – I’m learning Armenian.
